This paper provides students with the opportunity to engage with the wider community in a work-related or applied project setting. This allows for professional and personal development within varied work-related settings relevant to the fields of health, sport and human performance.

Engagement in this paper will fall into three broad categories:

  1. Full immersion into a workplace or community (e.g., internship, practicum, work placement, summer research scholarships, clinical placement).
  2. Field-based applied projects/service learning (e.g., applied research projects, volunteering, industry projects, community projects, special topics with a community focus, Entrepreneurialships, cultural performances, etc).
  3. In class and online learning to enhance readiness to seek, secure and survive employment an/or other career pathways post completion of the undergraduate qualification.

Students have the ability to self-select their own placement, or draw from the placements offered by University partners, in a relevant organisation or community group. This process will be facilitated through a Programme and University-wide System.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Demonstrate in context work-ready skills (such as developing a relevant CV, interview techniques, career statements, job seeking skills, professional appearance and presentation, articulating and providing evidence of skills).

    Identify and apply a range of personal skills (e.g. communication, interpersonal relations, leadership, and organisational abilities) required within a work-related setting.

    Review personal progress and reflect on ways of enhancing personal skills, development and employability.

    Demonstrate the ability to collect, collate, analyse and interpret health or sport science-based research results.

This paper is 100% internally assessed. It is particularly important to submit all assessment items. To maximise your chances of success, you will need to be engaged in the paper for the entire period of the course, and ensure that you complete your placement with professionalism. Please note that this is a 15pt paper like all other university courses, and therefore you are expected to engage in all aspects in order to maximise your success.

Across the course there is a series of online tasks, linked directly to assessment activities. All tasks will be accessed via Moodle, however, you will need to also use the library website (and actual space), and a range of web pages to help you complete this course.

Workload

The workload for this paper totals 150 hrs. This is made up of 12 hours face to face lectures/workshop. In addition to this, all students are expected to complete 20 hrs of online tasks, a minimum of 60 hrs in a work-placement, and use the remaining up to 60 hrs for independent study including readings and preparation for assessments.
